The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has announced that the Executive Bill package for the proposed state policing framework will be presented to President Bola Tinubu on 3 September 2026.
President Tinubu inaugurated the presidential committee in July to develop the legal framework for implementing state police across Nigeria.
Chairman of the Working Group and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed the timeline while briefing journalists at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday following the group’s inaugural meeting.
Gbajabiamila said the draft legislation would undergo a national consultation after it is presented to the President and receives his approval. The consultation, he noted, will provide stakeholders with an opportunity to review the proposed provisions, safeguards, funding arrangements and transition framework before the Bill is transmitted to the National Assembly.
He also invited members of the public and relevant stakeholders to submit memoranda, position papers and practical recommendations to enrich the legislative process.
According to him, the Working Group has adopted a seven-week, milestone-driven work programme running from 27 July to 14 September 2026.
“The resulting Executive Bill package is scheduled for presentation to the President on 3 September. Subject to his approval, a national consultation on the completed draft will follow, after which the text and supporting materials will be revised and prepared for formal transmission to the National Assembly,” Gbajabiamila said.
He stressed that although the timetable is ambitious, it is intended to ensure thorough consultation and careful drafting rather than expedite the process at the expense of quality.
