Nigeria’s Super Falcons booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a commanding 6-2 victory over Egypt in Casablanca on Tuesday.
The nine-goal thriller at Stade Larbi Zaouli saw the African heavyweights produce one of their most impressive attacking displays of the tournament, bouncing back from their opening defeat to Malawi to progress to the knockout stage.
The Super Falcons broke the deadlock in the 21st minute when Asisat Oshoala converted from the penalty spot after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review ruled that an Egyptian defender had handled the ball.
Nigeria extended their advantage in first-half stoppage time as substitute Gift Monday marked her first goal of the competition with a composed finish.
Egypt reduced the deficit moments before the interval after Nadine Ghazi scored from the spot following another VAR intervention, leaving Nigeria with a narrow 2-1 lead at half-time.
The Super Falcons resumed with greater intensity and restored their two-goal cushion in the 57th minute. Uchenna Kanu, introduced from the bench, capitalised on a defensive error to make it 3-1.
Nigeria continued to dominate proceedings and were awarded another penalty after a VAR review. Christy Ucheibe made no mistake from the spot in the 81st minute, calmly sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to stretch the lead to 4-1.
Ghazi struck again three minutes later to give Egypt a glimmer of hope, but any thoughts of a comeback were quickly ended as Nigeria earned a fourth penalty of the evening following yet another VAR check.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade converted confidently in added time to make it 5-2 before turning provider minutes later, setting up Joy Omewa, who completed the rout with Nigeria’s sixth goal in the 94th minute.
Nigeria enjoyed 59 per cent possession and consistently troubled the Egyptian defence with their attacking play, sealing a convincing victory that secured qualification for the last eight.
The match also featured several disciplinary incidents. Egypt’s Essam H., Menna Tarek and Nour Abdelwahed were cautioned, while Nigeria’s Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu also received yellow cards. Egypt head coach Mohamed Kamal was booked late in the contest.
The emphatic result sends the Super Falcons into the quarter-finals with renewed confidence as they continue their pursuit of another continental title.
