NAUB student builds autonomous robot for indoor firefighting

A final-year Information Technology student at the Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB), Muhammad Inuwa Abdullahi, has developed an autonomous firefighting robot capable of detecting and suppressing small indoor fires without direct human intervention.

Abdullahi, an indigene of Pantami in Gombe State, developed the prototype as his final-year project using an Arduino Uno microcontroller.

The robotic system is designed to detect flames, navigate towards the source of a fire and activate a water pump to help extinguish it before it spreads.

The project combines robotics, embedded systems and automation in an effort to provide an early-response mechanism for indoor fire incidents.

Abdullahi said his motivation was to explore how technology could be used to protect lives and property by detecting fires early and responding quickly.

“I built this robot to show how technology can help save lives and property before fire spreads. It’s my contribution to solving real problems in our society,” he said.

According to the student, the system could potentially be adapted for use in homes, schools, offices, hospitals, laboratories, libraries, warehouses and other enclosed spaces where early detection could help reduce fire-related damage.

The innovation comes amid growing calls for Nigerian universities to strengthen practical research and develop indigenous technological solutions to local challenges.

Abdullahi’s project also illustrates how university-based research can be translated into practical applications in areas including public safety, automation and emergency response.

NAUB was established during the tenure of former Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai, with the aim of strengthening the relationship between military operations, academic research, science, technology and national development.

The institution was conceived to produce skilled professionals, promote research and support the development of technological solutions to Nigeria’s security and socio-economic challenges.

The firefighting robot reflects those objectives by applying information technology and automation to a practical safety challenge.

The prototype could also provide a basis for further research into more advanced emergency-response systems incorporating artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity, enhanced sensors and smart-building technologies.

As Nigeria continues to encourage indigenous research and reduce dependence on imported technology, the project highlights the potential of young Nigerian innovators to develop technology-driven responses to everyday problems.

Abdullahi said he hoped the project would inspire more young Nigerians to pursue research and innovation and develop solutions capable of contributing to community development and national progress.
