Algeria and Morocco have secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil after reaching the semi-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Algeria secured a historic first appearance at the global tournament after recovering from a goal down to defeat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in their quarter-final.
Morocco also booked their place at the World Cup with a 2-1 victory over South Africa.
Under the qualification format, the four teams that reach the WAFCON semi-finals automatically qualify for the 2027 World Cup.
Two more African teams will join Algeria and Morocco at the tournament after the remaining quarter-final matches.
Cameroon will face Nigeria, while Malawi will meet Ghana on Sunday, with both winners guaranteed qualification for the World Cup by advancing to the WAFCON semi-finals.
The teams that lose those quarter-finals will still have an opportunity to qualify through a play-off route.
Côte d’Ivoire and South Africa, the two defeated quarter-finalists from the completed matches, will meet in a play-off on 13 August. The winner will progress to the 2027 World Cup alongside one of the other two quarter-final losers.
The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be hosted by Brazil.
