Super Falcons head coach, Justine Madugu, has blamed poor finishing for Nigeria’s 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Falcons were knocked out of the tournament following a closely contested encounter at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium on Sunday night.
Myriam Nyadjou scored the only goal of the match in the 19th minute, curling a free-kick beyond the reach of the Nigerian goalkeeper to give Cameroon the lead.
Nigeria created several opportunities to get back into the game, but the Super Falcons were unable to convert their chances, while Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina produced a series of impressive saves to preserve her side’s advantage.
Speaking after the match, Madugu expressed disappointment with the result, insisting that the outcome could have been different had Nigeria been more clinical in front of goal.
“It was not our intention to lose. If we had been more clinical, the game could have been different,” Madugu said.
The defeat ended Nigeria’s campaign in the competition, while Cameroon advanced to the semi-finals, where they will face hosts Morocco in Rabat on Wednesday night.
The Indomitable Lionesses have also secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Despite their elimination, the Super Falcons still have another opportunity to qualify for the global tournament. Nigeria will face Banyana Banyana of South Africa in a play-in match for a place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
