Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has written to the State House of Assembly seeking approval to reorder the 2026 budget, christened the “Budget of Shared Prosperity”.
The governor’s request was contained in a letter read to lawmakers on Tuesday by the Clerk of the House, Adenike Oshinowo.
The letter outlined the rationale and priorities behind the proposed adjustment, which lawmakers said was aimed at ensuring that available resources were directed towards critical and high-priority projects.
Chairman of the House Committee on Economic Planning and Budget, Olumoh Sa’ad, said the 2026 budget had achieved about 69 per cent performance, making the proposed reordering necessary to align spending with emerging priorities.
Sa’ad also suggested that the review could provide an opportunity for the governor to reconsider the proposed N200 billion bond recently presented to the House.
Contributing to the debate, Aro Moshood described the budget reordering as a dividend of democracy, expressing optimism that it would enable the government to respond more effectively to the needs of residents across the state.
Gbolahan Yishawu commended the performance of the budget so far and called for funds to be redirected towards projects that were progressing well and nearing completion.
He, however, stressed the importance of adequately funding projects according to their scope and level of execution, noting that while some capital projects had recorded significant progress, others remained ongoing and required sustained financing to reach completion.
Kehinde Joseph urged the government to give greater attention to environmental challenges, particularly drainage and flood-control projects.
He called for adequate funding for interventions aimed at tackling flooding and improving residents’ quality of life.
Following the contributions, the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, referred the governor’s request to the Committee on Economic Planning and Budget for consideration.
Obasa directed the committee to submit its report to the House within two weeks.
