Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has hinted that he could take an extended break from music as he looks towards life beyond his performing career.
Speaking during an appearance on The Uncut Podcast, the 33-year-old singer said he does not see himself remaining in the spotlight at 40 while competing with artistes in their 20s.
Davido, however, clarified that his comments should not be interpreted as suggesting that established musicians should retire from the industry.
“Music is my blood but I’m not going to be 40 still dragging with guys in their 20s. Jay-Z took a break and he is doing his thing,” he said.
The singer noted that his extensive catalogue and established fan base would allow him to step away from music for years and still return to significant commercial success.
“I can take a 10-year break and still do a 50-arena tour. I have the catalogue. I might decide not to make another song for the rest of my life, and nobody is touching my catalogue,” Davido said.
He also stressed that a career in music should provide artistes with opportunities to explore other ventures beyond recording and performing.
“All I am saying is there are other things music should be able to help you branch out into,” he added.
Davido’s comments have sparked discussions among fans about the future of his career, particularly as he continues to balance music with other business and entertainment ventures.
