A six-year-old girl from a British-Palestinian family has died in hospital following a drowning incident off the coast of Shoreham in southern England that also claimed the lives of her parents and 14-year-old sister.
Saja El-Khawas had been receiving treatment in critical condition since Tuesday, when emergency services pulled the family from the sea. She died in hospital on Friday, according to Sussex Police.
Her parents and teenage sister were pronounced dead after being rescued from the water.
The family is believed to have travelled from their home in London to the seaside at Shoreham.
Sussex Police said a review of CCTV footage and accounts from witnesses indicated that the deaths were the result of a “tragic accident”.
The Palestinian Forum in Britain said the family were British citizens of Palestinian origin, with roots in the Rashidieh refugee camp in Lebanon.
Saja’s father was reportedly a Palestinian refugee from the Rashidieh Camp, while the family had been living in London before the tragedy.
Police have not indicated that the incident was suspicious, describing it instead as a tragic accident.
