The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, has urged victims of violence linked to the August 15 governorship election to submit their cases to the state’s Election Violence Relief Committee.
Egbedun, who chairs the committee, made the appeal on Thursday at its inaugural meeting in Osun State.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Olamide Tiamiyu, the Speaker said the committee was established to hear victims’ complaints, verify genuine claims and ensure that those affected received appropriate relief.
He said the committee had already started receiving and collating complaints from victims, assuring affected individuals and their families of the support of the state government.
Egbedun described the committee’s assignment as humanitarian and sensitive, pledging that its proceedings would be guided by fairness, transparency and compassion.
He said every submission would be thoroughly considered and decisions would be based on facts and verified claims.
The Speaker particularly appealed to people who sustained injuries during the election period and remained in hospital to come forward, preferably through relatives or representatives, to present their cases.
According to him, once such cases are brought before the committee, it would liaise with the hospitals treating the victims to ensure they received necessary medical attention.
He also assured victims, their families and the hospitals involved that the government would take responsibility for approved treatment costs.
Egbedun further commended the Adeleke Dynasty for its intervention on behalf of children who lost their parents or benefactors during the election-related violence.
He disclosed that the Dynasty, through the Springtime Development Foundation, had offered to sponsor scholarships for children whose parents died in the violence.
The Speaker described the initiative as a demonstration of compassion and concern for vulnerable families affected by the incidents.
He said providing education for the affected children was one of the most meaningful ways to honour those who lost their lives, stressing the importance of investing in the children’s future.
