The United States has launched fresh airstrikes against targets linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the US Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed.
CENTCOM said the strikes began at 12 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, following recent attacks and attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and US service members deployed in the region.
“Today at 12 p.m. ET, U.S. forces began striking Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets in Iran. The strikes follow recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American service members deployed to the region,” CENTCOM said in a post on X.
The strikes followed a warning by US President Donald Trump that Washington would respond forcefully to attacks on US bases in Jordan over the weekend.
Iran has reportedly attacked eight commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz since its blockade of ships travelling to and from Iranian ports resumed on July 14, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which monitors maritime security incidents in the region.
Four of the reported attacks have occurred since last Monday, according to the maritime security body.
Iran has remained defiant amid the escalating tensions, warning that it would prevent oil exports from the Gulf.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported explosions on Qeshm Island, located on the northern side of the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest US strikes come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the strategically important Strait of Hormuz remaining a major flashpoint for regional security and global energy supplies.
