Nigerian comedian and social media influencer, Aderombi Adedayo Martins, popularly known as DeeOne, has criticised Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, over the alleged failure of the Nigeria Police Force to arrest social media personality VeryDarkMan after he reportedly refused to honour a police invitation.
DeeOne made the allegations in an Instagram video on Tuesday while reacting to the controversy surrounding the police invitation extended to VeryDarkMan.
The comedian cited the arrests of former Big Brother Naija housemate Tacha and businessman Blord over alleged failures to honour police invitations, arguing that no citizen should receive preferential treatment.
Reacting to a post by VeryDarkMan concerning the invitation, DeeOne accused the IGP of shielding the social media personality from arrest.
He said:
“Fellow Nigerians, our current Inspector-General of Police, Mr Tunji Disu, is becoming a useless man. What is good for a citizen is also good for all citizens.”
DeeOne recalled the reported arrest of Tacha after she allegedly failed to honour police invitations on two occasions, noting that she was subsequently released on bail.
He also referenced the arrest of Blord, claiming that the businessman was taken into custody and charged to court after allegedly failing to honour a police invitation.
According to DeeOne, VeryDarkMan had been invited by the police on two occasions but had publicly stated that he would not honour the invitation.
He questioned why the police had allegedly not taken similar action against the social media personality.
“Today, VeryDarkMan has been invited by the same NPF twice. He has even come out on his platform to say that he will not honour the invitation. Now, to the IGP, you cannot be in office forever,” he said.
DeeOne further alleged that approval had been given for VeryDarkMan’s arrest but claimed that the IGP was preventing the arrest from taking place.
“They have approved for VeryDarkMan to be arrested. The person that is holding the arrest now is IGP Tunji Disu. So, Nigerians, is this man working for Nigerians or working for VeryDarkMan?” he asked.
The comedian also warned that he would continue to speak publicly about the matter, saying he would not be intimidated by any attempt to silence him.
He added that he could raise further issues concerning the IGP’s performance if the controversy continued.
The latest criticism comes after VeryDarkMan announced that he would not honour the police invitation.
The social media personality was reportedly invited following a series of allegations he made against the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG Jimoh Moshood.
The allegations and subsequent invitation have generated public debate over police procedure, equal treatment and whether public figures who decline police invitations should face similar consequences regardless of their status.
