Nollywood actress Jemima Osunde has raised concerns over the growing reports of food adulteration and contamination in Nigeria, questioning how consumers can reliably protect themselves from unsafe food.
The actress voiced her concerns on social media, saying Nigerians face increasing difficulty in knowing whether the food products they consume are safe.
“How is someone supposed to 100% avoid consuming these things?” she asked.
Osunde’s latest comments come after she previously spoke about health problems she said began after she consumed contaminated food while working on a film set in Ibadan.
According to the actress, she subsequently contracted Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a bacterial infection that affects the stomach, and later developed gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
She said the health complications affected her for several years, highlighting the potential consequences of consuming contaminated food.
Her latest remarks have renewed concerns over food safety in Nigeria, particularly the monitoring of food production, processing and distribution.
The actress’s comments have also added to calls for stronger enforcement of food safety regulations and more effective oversight to prevent adulterated or contaminated products from reaching consumers.
With food products forming a central part of everyday life, concerns over their safety continue to raise questions about the effectiveness of existing regulatory measures and the protection available to consumers.
