Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has commenced a vacation in Europe and directed an investigation into the disputed kingship of Koka Ilase in Obokun Local Government Area of the state.
The development was contained in a statement signed by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, and made available to newsmen in Osogbo on Sunday.
Rasheed said Adeleke had left Nigeria for a short vacation in Europe, during which he would also undergo medical examinations.
According to him, the governor is expected to spend time in the United Kingdom and other destinations, which would be announced later.
“I am taking a short break to refresh and get further prepared to serve the good people of Osun State,” Adeleke was quoted as saying.
The governor, however, directed the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported appointment of another monarch for Koka Ilase.
The development reportedly resulted in claims that the town now has two kings.
Adeleke instructed the ministry to review the matter and ensure that due process was followed in accordance with the state’s chieftaincy laws and traditions.
“I read of another King appointed outside the one on the stool. The ministry is hereby directed to look into the dispute and issue a report to set the records straight,” the governor said.
He urged all stakeholders involved in the dispute to remain calm and peaceful while the ministry conducts its investigation.
“Kingship is governed by extant laws and regulations, and the government will stand by the law and tradition of our people,” Adeleke added.
The governor’s directive is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the emergence of the alleged second monarch and establish the legally recognised occupant of the Koka Ilase throne.
