Nigerian Afrobeats musician Femi Kuti has revealed that he married his first wife primarily to enable their children to obtain British passports.
The Grammy-nominated musician made the disclosure during an interview with Channels Television, where he discussed his views on marriage, relationships and his personal lifestyle.
Femi, the eldest son of late Afrobeat pioneer and human rights activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti, said his decision to marry was driven by his desire to secure British passports for his children.
“I only married her so my children could get a British passport,” he said.
The musician also disclosed that he had informed his first wife before their marriage that he loved women and would not be able to remain faithful to one woman.
According to Femi, his first wife was aware of his views on relationships before they got married.
Femi Kuti was born in London, England, but is a Nigerian citizen.
Under UK citizenship rules in place in 1983, children born outside the United Kingdom could not automatically acquire British citizenship through a British father in certain circumstances.
