Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New Delhi, India, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 18th BRICS Summit.
Shettima joined other world leaders and senior government officials arriving in the Indian capital ahead of the summit, scheduled to hold on September 12 and 13 at Bharat Mandapam.
The meeting is expected to provide a platform for BRICS members and partner countries to deliberate on major global geopolitical and economic issues.
BRICS comprises 11 major emerging markets and developing countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the arrival of Russian President Vladimir Putin in New Delhi in the early hours of Wednesday.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was also expected to arrive later in the day, while Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to arrive today at about 12:15 p.m.
Xi’s visit will mark his first trip to India in nearly seven years.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Ugandan Vice President Jessica Alupo have also arrived in New Delhi for the summit.
The BRICS meeting is expected to focus on strengthening cooperation among member and partner countries while addressing key issues affecting the global economy and international relations.
