A member of the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has said he expects President Bola Tinubu to secure victory in Kano State in the 2027 presidential election despite the continued political influence of former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Jibrin, who represents Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in Kano State, made the claim during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, where he discussed the political landscape in the state ahead of the election.
Kwankwaso, a former two-term governor of Kano, is the running mate to Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), for the 2027 election.
Jibrin, who was previously associated with the Kwankwasiyya political movement, said he and other members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano were familiar with the movement’s organisation and political strategy.
“Who is more Kwankwasiyya than us? We understand the entire dynamics, Seun, if you want me to put a bet, I will put a bet with you, we will deliver Kano for the President (Tinubu), and the president will win in the 2027 election,” he said.
The lawmaker argued that perceptions about Tinubu’s level of support in Kano should not be confused with the eventual electoral outcome, saying the results would provide the clearest indication of voters’ preferences.
“Yes, there is always perception but I keep telling people that what will produce the real picture of what is on ground is the election results,” Jibrin said.
He acknowledged that Nigerians were facing challenges but argued that public sentiment should ultimately be measured through the ballot.
Jibrin also claimed that support for Tinubu had increased across northern Nigeria.
“The president has never been liked so much as he is being liked in the Northern part of the country,” he said.
On the APC’s preparations in Kano, Jibrin said senior party figures were coordinating their activities ahead of the election.
He listed the state governor, deputy governor, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Hanga, Senator Kabiru Gaya, former governor Ibrahim Shekarau and the chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, Abubakar Bichi, among those involved in the party’s preparations.
“In Kano, we are preparing ourselves, the governor is very much on ground and experienced. The deputy governor is extremely experienced, the deputy senate president is there. Senator Hanga is there, Kabiru Gaya is there, Shekarau is there, the chairman, appropriations committee is there (Bichi), we are meeting daily, we understand the dynamics,” he said.
Jibrin’s comments come amid political realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with Obi and Kwankwaso preparing to contest on the NDC ticket, while Tinubu is seeking re-election on the APC platform.
The lawmaker has previously expressed confidence in Tinubu’s prospects in Kano while acknowledging Kwankwaso’s longstanding political influence and support base in the state.
