Ahead of the governorship primaries in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States, the Labour Party has reduced nomination fee from N25 million to N15 million.

In a series of tweets Monday, spokesperson for the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Council, Kenneth Okonkwo, had out over the N25 million governorship nomination fee, describing it as exorbitant.

Highlighting Article 8(h) of the party’s constitution, he said: “To broaden participation in governance at all levels by ensuring that the costs of the electoral process do not constitute hindrance to any Nigerian”.

However, on Wednesday, Okonkwo took to Twitter to share the revised charge for the Labour Party governorship nomination forms.

According to him, the party had taken note of the suggestions of Nigerians that a party of working-class Nigerians should settle for a nomination fee of no more than N15 million for the post of a governor.

He said the decision came after due consultation with relevant stakeholders in the party and taking into consideration the overwhelming interest of Nigerians in the party.

The Labour Party campaign spokesman highlighted the need to birth a new Nigeria, in view of the prevailing hike in market prices, describing the party as a listening party.

“In line with our avowed disposition to carry Nigerians along in what we do, the Party has decided to review the cost of nomination forms downwards for all positions taking into consideration the suggested amount of N15 million for the post of Governor.

“We must move together to salvage our country from incompetent and dishonest leadership of the old order”, he added.
