The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 30 new academic programmes for the Federal University Dutse (FUD), including Artificial Intelligence, Law, Data Science, Medical Laboratory Science and Community Health.
The approval was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday in Dutse, Jigawa State, by the university’s Acting Director of Public Affairs, Abdullahi Yahaya.
Yahaya said the approval was contained in a letter dated 11 September 2026, with reference number NUC/AP/F33/VOL.II/15, signed by the Director of Academic Planning of the NUC, Abubakar M. Girei.
He said the letter was addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ahmad Gumel.
According to Yahaya, the commission approved the commencement of academic activities by the Faculty of Law and granted full-time approval for the 30 programmes from the 2026/2027 academic session.
Among the newly approved undergraduate programmes are B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Information Systems and LL.B. Common and Islamic Law.
Other programmes include B.Sc. Education in Physics, Biology and Mathematics, as well as B.Ed. Educational Management, Early Childhood Education and Adult Education.
The NUC also approved several health-related programmes, including B.Sc. Community Health, Medical Laboratory Science, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Radiography and Optometry.
Yahaya said other approved programmes include B.Sc. Parasitology and Entomology, Environmental Standards, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Applied Geology and Remote Sensing, as well as B.A. Education in Arabic and English.
The university also received approval to offer Science Laboratory Technology, with options in Biology and Biochemistry Technology.
At postgraduate level, the approved programmes include PGD, M.Sc. and PhD programmes in Forestry and Wildlife, Accounting, Treasury and Finance, Banking and Finance, and Information Technology.
Masters programmes in Banking and Finance and Accounting and Finance were also approved.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ahmad Gumel, described the approval as an important step in his administration’s efforts to expand the university’s academic offerings.
Gumel said the new programmes were designed to respond to evolving educational needs, particularly in technology, science education and health-related disciplines.
He added that the expansion would equip students with relevant skills and knowledge aligned with industry demands and societal challenges, helping to prepare FUD graduates for the workforce.
