The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially appointed 56-year-old Suleiman Kum as the new Head of its Nigeria National Office (HNO).

Kum succeeds Dr Amos Dangut, whose three-year tenure ended on 1 October 2026. Dangut has since taken up the position of Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of WAEC.

The appointment was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by WAEC Nigeria’s Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina.

Kum previously served as Deputy Registrar in the HNO’s office and was Senior Deputy Registrar in charge of Test Administration before the end of August.

Described by WAEC as a seasoned test developer, administrator and executive, Kum joined the council on 17 July 1998 as Assistant Registrar II.

According to the council, he has played a role in several technological and administrative innovations, including the introduction of Variable Data Printing and enhanced security features in examination printing.

He was also credited with replacing council-wide attendance systems with facial-recognition biometric devices and overseeing the delivery of Achievement Tests through computer-based examinations.

WAEC said Kum has extensive experience in test development and administration, examination security, and the management of branch and zonal offices.

During his career, he also established the WAEC Gusau office as a Custodial Centre as part of efforts to strengthen examination security and administration.

Kum, who is from Plateau State, holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Educational Administration and Planning at the institution.

He has held several operational and administrative positions within WAEC.

His previous roles include Assistant Registrar II and Head of Examinations Security in Awka; Assistant Registrar I and Head of Examinations Security in Yola and Makurdi; Senior Assistant Registrar I and Branch Controller in Gusau; and Principal Assistant Registrar and Branch Controller in Kano.

He also served as Deputy Registrar and Head of the Security Printing Department, Deputy Registrar and Zonal Coordinator in Port Harcourt and Ikeja, Director of Administration, and Senior Deputy Registrar in charge of Test Administration.

WAEC said Kum had demonstrated “integrity, diligence, innovation and a strong commitment to service” throughout his career.

The council added that his leadership across various portfolios had earned him institutional commendations, accolades and awards.

Kum assumes leadership of the Nigeria National Office at a time when examination bodies face growing demands for stronger security measures, technological innovation and improved administration of public examinations.
