Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has revealed that the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, told him he regularly prayed for him and believed he would triumph.
Sowore said Adeboye also told him that he knew his ways were pure during their recent meeting at the church’s national headquarters in Ebute-Metta, Lagos.
The activist made the disclosure during an interview on the Naija Unfiltered Podcast, about a week after attending the RCCG’s National Thanksgiving Service.
Following the service, Sowore had announced in a post on X that Adeboye offered to pray for him during a private meeting.
Recounting the encounter, the AAC presidential candidate said the cleric recognised him and recalled that he had been praying for him.
According to Sowore, Adeboye told him: “I know you very well, and I pray for you all the time, and I know your ways are pure, and that you will triumph.”
Sowore explained that he was initially asked to wait near Adeboye’s car after the service but was later informed that the cleric wanted to see him in the church’s vestry.
He said their conversation also revisited their first meeting in 1996, when he approached Adeboye for support in a campaign against cultism in Nigerian universities.
Sowore recalled that he visited the cleric after completing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme to seek assistance in tackling the growing problem of cultism on university campuses.
He said Adeboye supported the initiative and directed that ₦10,000 be given to him to help fund the campaign.
“We used it to go and campaign against cultism,” Sowore said.
Speaking about their recent encounter, Sowore said Adeboye asked for his permission before praying for him.
He agreed but told the cleric that he would keep his eyes open during the prayer. According to Sowore, Adeboye went ahead with the prayer, after which they both stood up and laughed.
Asked whether he had given his life to Christ, Sowore said the subject did not come up during their conversation.
He explained that he was not involved in organised religion and that they did not discuss whether he would accept Christianity.
Sowore also clarified that he did not discuss his presidential ambition with Adeboye, describing their encounter as a personal conversation.
He added that the cleric appeared surprised when he recalled that they had first met nearly three decades ago.
