Fulham defender Calvin Bassey has reached 100 appearances in the English Premier League, becoming the second Nigerian player to achieve the milestone for the London club.
The 26-year-old reached the landmark during Fulham’s 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Saturday.
Bassey played the entire 90 minutes, making his sixth league appearance of the season. He is the 28th player to record 100 Premier League appearances for Fulham, following in the footsteps of his Super Eagles teammate Alex Iwobi, who has made 103 league appearances for the club.
The Nigerian international has scored three goals and provided one assist in his 100 Premier League appearances for Fulham, accumulating 8,411 minutes on the pitch. Across all competitions, he has featured 108 times for the club, scoring four goals.
Bassey began his football career in Leicester City’s academy before moving to Scottish side Rangers, where he made 65 appearances. He later joined Dutch club Ajax, making 39 appearances before signing for Fulham in July 2023.
According to Transfermarkt, 16 Nigerian players had recorded at least 100 Premier League appearances before Bassey joined the list.
Iwobi leads the Nigerian players’ rankings with 320 appearances, followed by Shola Ameobi with 299, Nwankwo Kanu with 272, Yakubu Aiyegbeni with 252 and John Obi Mikel with 249.
Other Nigerians on the list include Joseph Yobo, with 228 appearances; Wilfred Ndidi and Victor Moses, with 220 each; Kelechi Iheanacho, with 196; Jay-Jay Okocha, with 124; and Ola Aina, with 109.
Despite Bassey’s personal achievement, Fulham suffered a disappointing defeat after surrendering their second-half lead against Ipswich.
Ryan Sessegnon put Fulham ahead in the 55th minute, but Abdoul Ouattara equalised in the 88th minute before Ipswich captain Dara O’Shea scored the winner in stoppage time.
Iwobi, who also started his sixth league match of the season, was substituted for Emile Smith Rowe in the 87th minute.
The defeat left Fulham in the relegation zone with two points from six matches, increasing the pressure on head coach Álvaro Arbeloa as he continues his search for his first Premier League victory in charge.
