The management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, has expelled a final-year student, Nora Onyewuenyi, over what the institution described as damaging social media content.
The university also accused the student, of the Department of English and Literary Studies, of making false claims that her project topic was citizenship and that her supervisor had written the project for her.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Monday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Ngozi Okiridu, said Onyewuenyi reportedly admitted that the claims were untrue and were made solely to generate social media content.
According to the statement, the institution attempted to persuade the student to withdraw her comments, but she allegedly refused.
The university said the expulsion was intended to deter other students from engaging in similar conduct.
The statement read, “The Senate has expelled Miss Onyewuenyi Chiamaka Nora with Matriculation Number U/2022/19900, a final-year student of the Department of English and Literary Studies, over damaging content creation.
“The expulsion is to serve as a deterrent to others who may want to do the same.
“Recall that the said student had, in an interview that went viral, claimed that her project topic was ‘Citizenship’ when there is no such topic as Citizenship in the Department. She also claimed that her supervisor was the one who wrote the project for her.”
The university’s spokesperson described the social media post as damaging to the institution’s reputation, stressing that such behaviour would not be tolerated.
The expulsion follows the circulation of the student’s interview on social media, which prompted the university to respond to the allegations concerning its academic standards and project supervision.
