The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned Nigerian universities and other tertiary institutions against issuing admission letters to candidates, insisting that the responsibility rests solely with the board.
The JAMB Registrar, Professor Segun Aina, issued the warning when he received a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, during a courtesy visit to his office.
Aina said JAMB was the only body legally authorised to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the country.
He expressed concern that candidates often mistake admission letters issued by individual institutions for official documents, believing that they confirm their admission status.
The registrar urged institutions involved in the practice to stop immediately and ensure that candidates obtain the appropriate admission documents from JAMB.
He recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed all tertiary institutions to process admissions through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).
Aina warned that any admission conducted outside the platform was illegal and invalid.
He further explained that institutions could not substitute their own documents for the official JAMB admission letter after candidates had accepted their offers through CAPS.
According to him, only admissions recognised through the platform would be accepted for purposes such as mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The warning underscores JAMB’s position that tertiary institutions must comply with the approved admissions process and ensure that candidates’ admission records are properly recognised through CAPS.
