Military tanks and security personnel have been deployed to Abuja’s City Gate ahead of a planned mega march by supporters of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Checks by newsmen early in the morning showed security operatives setting up barricades and carrying out stop-and-search operations around the City Gate as preparations for the march continued.

Personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Civilian Joint Task Force, Department of State Services (DSS) and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were among those deployed to the area.

The heavy security presence appeared aimed at maintaining law and order and preventing possible disturbances during the planned demonstration.

The march was announced by supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to demand good governance.

As of the time of filing this report, the area had been cordoned off, with armoured tanks and security personnel stationed at strategic points around the City Gate.
