The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared Nigeria Ebola-free following the evacuation of the country’s index patient to Switzerland for further medical treatment.
WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Janabi, announced the development on Monday in a statement published on his verified X account.

Janabi said Nigeria would continue to monitor 52 contacts linked to the patient, while Swiss authorities would assume responsibility for her ongoing treatment and the surveillance of her husband, who is the 53rd contact.

He noted that the patient was clinically stable after Nigerian medical teams successfully managed the acute phase of her illness and stabilised her condition.

“Nigeria is now Ebola-free following the evacuation of the index patient to Switzerland,” Janabi said.

He added that Nigerian health authorities would maintain close surveillance of the 52 contacts, while their Swiss counterparts would oversee the patient’s continued care and monitor her husband.

The development follows confirmation by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) of an imported Ebola case linked to Uganda, which prompted the placement of 53 contacts under surveillance in Abuja.

With the patient’s transfer to Switzerland, the WHO said Nigeria had no remaining confirmed Ebola cases.

The continued monitoring of the identified contacts forms part of the public health response to the case.
