The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force is prepared to ensure the successful conduct of the 2027 general elections.
Disu gave the assurance on Tuesday in Abuja when a delegation led by the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Dr Leonardo Simao, paid him a courtesy visit.
The police chief told the delegation that the force had commenced training programmes for its personnel and updated their knowledge of election security and management ahead of the polls.
“As I speak with you, we have embarked on the training of our officers and have updated their knowledge about the elections.
“In spite of the fact that the Nigeria Police Force is in charge of the internal security of the country and the elections, we know that we cannot do it alone.
“We can only succeed with the assistance of our sister security agencies, so we have been having collaborative meetings, and trainings together,” he said.
Disu explained that the police had held several joint training sessions and meetings with other security agencies to strengthen their preparedness for the elections.
The agencies involved include the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service and the Department of State Services.
He added that the training programmes also addressed the need to ensure an inclusive electoral process, particularly by making adequate provisions for persons living with disabilities.
The IGP’s remarks come as preparations gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, with security agencies expected to work together to maintain law and order throughout the electoral process.
