The English Football Association have released a statement following Lauren James’ red card against Nigeria.

James was dismissed in the second half of the match against the Super Falcons for stamping on Michelle Alozie.

The Chelsea forward is handed an automatic one-game ban, which could be extended via FIFA’s disciplinary process.

An FA spokesman said: “Lauren is really sorry for her actions which led to the red card and is full of remorse. It is wholly out of character for her.

“We will be supporting Lauren throughout and will be putting forward representation on her behalf. We fully respect FIFA’s disciplinary process and will not be making any further comment until after any decision has been made.”

The FA are now awaiting the length of her suspension from FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee.

Earlier in the tournament, Nigeria’s Deborah Abiodun served a three-match ban after being sent off during the Super Falcons’ first group-stage match.
