The Korea Cultural Centre Nigeria (KCCN) has been involved in training sessions for selected public schools in Lagos State and Abuja starting Wednesday, 15 November till Friday, 24 November.

In a bid to bolster the grassroots development of Taekwondo in Nigeria, the KCCN has implemented a termly Taekwondo training project targeting specific Basic schools in the Federal Capital Territory and Lagos. This was disclosed in a statement by the organisation in Abuja.

“As part of efforts to develop Nigeria taekwondo at the grassroots level, the Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria (KCCN) had put in place a termly taekwondo training project for selected Basic schools in the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja) and Lagos.

“The following are the selected five schools in Abuja with permanent taekwondo training infrastructures and two in Lagos involved in the KCCN Public school Taekwondo project: Nigeria-Korea Model school, Piwoyi, Lugbe Road Abuja, Junior Sec School Maitama Abuja, LEA Wuse Zone 3, Abuja, LEA Maitama Abuja, LEA Wuse Zone 2 Abuja, Boys Junior academy, Mandillas, Lagos Island and Kuramo Junior High School, Sandfill, Victoria Island Lagos”, the statement read in part.

In contrast to the five-year-old Abuja training project, the Lagos training initiative commenced in June 2023. The ongoing training session for the first term of the 2023/24 academic year is scheduled to conclude on Friday, 24 November 2023.

Each of these schools enlists the participation of forty students who receive training under the guidance of experienced Taekwondo instructors. To support the smooth operation of the project and enhance the student’s interest and skills, the KCCN regularly supplies these schools with uniforms, first-aid kits, and other Taekwondo training accessories.

Furthermore, a biennial U-15 Taekwondo championship is a highlight for students from these schools. The most recent edition took place in November 2022 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja. The subsequent edition is anticipated to occur towards the conclusion of 2024.
