This is just as European leaders are coming up with drastic restriction measures to curtail the spread of the virus, particularly the Omicron variant, which is fast accounting for the major cause of Covid-19 cases in the region.
For the first time in February 2020 when Nigeria registered in the Covid map, the highest daily count was recorded on Wednesday.
The 4,035 new cases reported were almost double that of 2,078 on Tuesday, which was the highest until this new infamous record.
Lagos State alone accounts for 3,393 cases with the other states being Rivers (260), Edo (62), Akwa Ibom (42), Kaduna (39), Ekiti and Oyo (38 each) while Delta and Kano have 31 each.
Others are: Ogun (30), Abia (26), Bauchi (15), Ondo (14), Enugu (9), and Kwara (7).
So far, 231,413 cases have been reported with 211,853 discharged and 2,991 fatalities.
The Federal Government and its relevant agencies have cautioned against travels and mass social or religious activities this Yuletide season.
In Europe, where social gatherings were only just returning to life in major cities, but many bars and major pubs have now had to be shut down.
Europe has recorded over 89 million cases and 1.5 million Covid-related deaths in total, according to the latest European Union figures.
Earlier this week, Spain recorded its highest daily cases since the start of the pandemic from the variant.
The southwest European nation reported a record 49,823 new daily infections — surpassing the previous record of 44,357 reported in January at the height of the early surge.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has rallied for urgency by meeting regional leaders to discuss implementing new restrictions, BBC reported.
Neighbouring Portugal has also ordered bars and nightclubs to shut down from Boxing day, 26th December, while also making working from home obligatory from that date until 8th January, the BBC reported. Outdoor gatherings will be limited to 10 people, the official statement said.
In France, authorities warned daily cases could soon pass 100,000.
The BBC quoted the country’s health minister, Olivier Véran, saying the increase in daily infections in the country, currently at about 70,000, would be driven by the Omicron variant. This he said was likely to become the dominant variant by early January.
He noted that “another storm was coming and governments should brace for significant increases in cases.”
