Maritime Academy upgrade to varsity remains priority – Senator

The senator representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, Senator Ekong Sampson, has assured his constituents that hope for the upgrade of the Maritime Academy to a full-fledged Maritime University is not lost.

Expectations for the upgrade of the academy located in Oron Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State were heightened and dashed two years ago, leaving the upgrade of the institution a tall dream to date.

Speaking in Eket Local Government Area during the empowerment of over 650 constituents with business startup grants and scholarships, Sampson said the upgrade of the institution remained top of his legislative agenda.

He also said that his office was working with other stakeholders to attract a federal University to the Eket federal constituency, adding that their increasing demand for it was receiving adequate attention.

The senator said, “I want to assure you that hope for upgrade of Maritime Academy Oron to a full-fledged Maritime University is not lost. The upgrading of the institution remains a top priority in my legislative agenda in the Senate.

“I am also aware of the increasing demand for a University in Eket Senatorial district. My office is also working in conjunction with stakeholders from the senatorial district to see how to attract a federal University to Eket federal constituency”.

The senator, who is also the chairman, of the Senate committee on Solid Minerals,  promised more empowerments, adding that he had created employment desk in his office to facilitate employment for applicants wishing to join federal government parastatals.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion and former Nigeria Ambassador to Russia and Belarus, Amb. Assam Assam commended the Senator for his outstanding performance within seven months in office.
