President Bola Tinubu has extended condolences to the people of Namibia over the death of President Hage Geingob, which had in the early hours of Sunday, less than three weeks after it was announced he would undergo treatment for cancer.

According to a statement posted on his official Facebook page, acting President Nangolo Mbumba said that Geingob, 82, died at Lady Pohamba Hospital in the capital, Windhoek with his wife and his children at his side.

Geingob was ineligible to run for reelection in November as Namibia’s constitution limits the president to a maximum of two terms in office.

In a statement he signed on Sunday, President Tinubu described the late Namibian leader as “a veteran in the struggle for democracy, a proponent of good governance, and an advocate for economic, social, and political solidarity among African peoples.

“This tragedy comes at a time when Africa is in dire need of more visionary leaders who believe in our common destiny and who can strengthen the bonds across our borders and spread the tendrils of cooperation in all fields of human endeavour.

“As Namibia mourns, I want to assure the Republic that my thoughts and prayers, and indeed those of all Nigerians, are with you”.
