Osun State House of Assembly has extended the tenure of office and re-appointed caretaker committees of 30 Local Government Areas and 39 others running Modakeke Area Office and Local Council Development Areas in the state.
The extension was subsequently secured for the caretaker chairmen, vice chairmen, scribes and their members’ fresh six months tenure, beginning in February and ending in August 2024.
A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mr. Olamide Tiamiyu, explained that the extension was sequel to a letter sent to the lawmakers through his principal, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, by Governor Ademola Adeleke, and read on the floor of the House at the plenary on Friday.
The statement further read: “Moving a motion to that effect was the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Babajide Kofoworola Adewunmi, representing Ede North State Constituency. The motion was seconded by the Chief Whip, Hon. Adewale Akerele, from Ilesa West State Constituency.
“Hon. Babajide Adewunmi, however, emphasised that in line with the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended, the State Assembly has the power to approve the extension.
“The members, after much deliberations and assessment of their performances, adopted the motion and approved the request thereby extending the tenure of the Caretaker Committees to August 2024.”
Egbedun, who congratulated the appointees, admonished them to continue to deliver dividends of democracy to the people at the grassroots.
