The next few days will witness preparations for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, United Kingdom’s longest-serving monarch, who died earlier Thursday at Balmoral aged 96. She reigned for 70 years.
On Friday, the transition to the reign of King Charles III is likely to include a gun salute, King Charles and Queen Camilla returning to London and the new King holding his first audience with the new Prime Minister Liz Truss.
An address to the nation is expected from King Charles.
The Accession Council, the ceremonial gathering for the official proclamation of the new King, is expected to be held on Saturday.
The choreography of these national events, alongside the public mourning, will begin to be unfurled.
Earlier in the day, the departed monarch’s family gathered at her Scottish estate after concerns grew about her health earlier on Thursday.
Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change.
In a statement announcing her transition, Buckingham Palace said: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.
“The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow”.
All the Queen’s children travelled to Balmoral, near Aberdeen, after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision.
Her grandson, Prince William, was also there, with his brother, Prince Harry, on his way.
