Regional Editor (North) of Nigeria’s authoritative newspaper, News Express, Garba Muhammad has emerged a presidential candidate of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

He was cleared by the Credentials Committee alongside two others – Al-Hassan Abdullahi Yahya of Gombe State Media Corporation and Dele Atunbi of the Nigerian Television Authority, Abuja.

The three men will battle it out at the eighth Triennial Delegates’ Conference of the NUJ, scheduled to hold in the Imo State capital from 26 to 28 November. The winner of the election, the expected highlight of the conference, will take over NUJ leadership from outgoing President, Chief Chris Isiguzo, who is serving out his second term of office.

With over 30 years experience in some of Nigeria’s major newspapers, Muhammad is a seasoned union leader, committed member of the NUJ and a champion of press freedom.

A strong advocate for improved journalists’ welfare, one of his primary objectives is to prioritise the welfare of journalists across Nigeria.

One of the things standing out in Muhammad’s favour is that he is the only independent journalist in the race. This, according to his supporters, makes him more likely to fight for journalists’ welfare without fear of victimisation.
