Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, has expressed excitement over the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) approval of the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport.
The governor disclosed that following the NCAA’s approval, the Ekiti Airport will from January be open to landing by private jets.
The governor spoke on Wednesday when he paid a thank-you visit to elder statesman and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), for his vital support during the construction of the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport.
Oyebanji, who informed Babalola that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority had granted clearance for the airport to begin non-scheduled flight operations from 13 December 2024, to 15 June 2025, also requested further assistance from the elder statesman to secure full commercial flight operation status for the airport.
Oyebanji appreciated Afe Babalola for his financial support towards the actualization of Ekiti Cargo international airport.
The governor delivered a letter of appreciation to Babalola on 18 December 2024, personally during a visit to Afe Babalola University on Wednesday.
Speaking during the visit, Oyebanji shared the positive news.
“We are here this afternoon to inform you of the good news from the NCAA granting approval to run non-scheduled flights from Ado-Ekiti Airport for six months, effective from 13 December 2024, to 15 June 2025.
“This approval allows chartered flights to land in Ado-Ekiti at any time during the day, and it paves the way for future commercial flights. This is a significant step in aligning Ekiti State with your vision of placing it on the international map of excellence”.
He added, “Starting from January, private jets will begin landing at Ado-Ekiti Airport. We are deeply grateful for your continued support. Your contributions have been crucial to the success of this project, and this letter is a token of the state government’s appreciation”.
In his letter, Oyebanji further expressed gratitude, stating, “I am pleased to inform you that on 11 December 2024, we received NCAA clearance to begin non-scheduled flight operations for six months, from December 13, 2024, to June 15, 2025. Your financial contribution towards purchasing navigational aids (CVOR/DME), control tower communications equipment, and constructing the car pad was invaluable, and we remain deeply thankful for your generosity”.
He continued, “The NCAA has outlined conditions for the full commercial flight operation status, including the installation of an Instrument Landing System to enhance the airport’s operational capacity. We will continue to count on your unwavering support to meet these requirements”.
The governor concluded, “Once again, thank you for your kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to the shared goals of development and prosperity for Ekiti State”.
In response, Babalola commended Oyebanji for his dedication to the airport project, stating, “Without a viable and functional transportation system, no state or country can thrive. The lack of proper transportation infrastructure has long hindered Ekiti State, with many potential investors unable to actualise their plans due to poor road networks, and the state being land-locked and airport-locked. But all that is changing, and this airport is the catalyst for a brighter future”.
Babalola emphasised the job opportunities the airport would create for Ekiti residents and the economic benefits, noting, “This airport will bring many benefits to our people, from creating jobs to stimulating local markets. A prosperous state leads to fewer hunger and anger issues, and consequently, a reduction in violence”.
He concluded by offering his full support, saying, “When you assumed office, you promised that this airport would become a reality. Today, by the grace of God and your unwavering determination, it has come to life. We will continue to work with you to make Ekiti State one of the best and safest places to invest and operate in Nigeria. You have started strong, and you will finish even stronger. Posterity will record your achievements for good”.
