The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, on Tuesday, called on motorists to adhere to road traffic rules to ensure a safe and peaceful holiday season.

Each year, the FRSC deploys resources across major highways to manage the surge in traffic during the Christmas and New Year period.

This year’s special operation, Operation Zero Tolerance, began on 15 December 2024 and will continue until 15 January 2025, to promote safer travel for all road users.

In a Christmas message, the Corps Marshal reiterated his commitment to fostering a safer road environment throughout the festive period.

Shehu, in a statement signed by the corps spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, urged Nigerians to be particularly mindful of their driving habits during this period of heightened traffic, as reckless driving could lead to avoidable road accidents.

“We have tasked our personnel to ensure the free flow of traffic and zero fatalities during the Yuletide celebrations.

“The entire workforce and logistics have been mobilised to all identified blackspots and will remain there until 15 January 2025. This is to ensure that everyone who travels home for Christmas and New Year returns safely,” Mohammed said.

The Corps Marshal also appealed to the public to support the FRSC’s ongoing campaign for safer roads.

He encouraged Christians to offer special prayers for peace and safety during church services, emphasising the need for consideration towards all road users.

“The goal is to arrive at our destinations safely,” he added.

In addition, Mohammed urged road users to stay informed about traffic conditions by tuning into the FRSC National Traffic Radio at 107.1 FM.

He reminded the public that the National Emergency Number, 122, is available for distress calls throughout the festive season and beyond.
