In a remarkable feat that etched her name in the pages of African sports history, Mausi Zannu secured Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal at the inaugural arm wrestling competition at the 13th African Games held in Accra, Ghana.

Competing in the fiercely contested 55kg left-hand senior women’s event, Zannu displayed exceptional skill, strength, and determination to clinch the coveted gold medal, marking a groundbreaking moment for Nigerian arm wrestling.

The historic achievement comes amidst a commendable performance by the Nigerian arm wrestling contingent, who collectively brought home two gold and four bronze medals from the Accra 2023 Arm Wrestling Championships.

Among the notable medalists was Winifred Ndidi, who claimed bronze in the women’s 80kg left-hand category, showcasing Nigeria’s prowess across different weight divisions.

Idowu Abiodun Yunusa added to Nigeria’s medal tally with another bronze in the fiercely competitive men’s 65kg left-hand event, underscoring the depth of talent within the Nigerian arm wrestling ranks.

Further bolstering Nigeria’s medal haul was Sarah Mathew, who outclassed opponents to seize the gold medal in the women’s 70kg left-hand category, adding to the nation’s glory on the arm wrestling stage.

Blessing Ogungbure’s bronze medal in the women’s 70kg left hand event further underscored Nigeria’s dominance in the sport, with multiple athletes demonstrating their prowess on the continental stage.

Not to be outdone, Samuel Nneka showcased his strength and skill to clinch bronze in the highly competitive men’s 85kg left-hand category, further cementing Nigeria’s status as a force to be reckoned with in African arm wrestling.
