Senator Godswill Akpabio, who represents Akwa Ibom North-West in the upper legislative chamber, is the President of the 10th Senate.

Akpabio, former Minister of Niger Delta, polled 63 votes to defeat Senator Abdul’aziz Yari of Zamfara South, who scored 46 votes.

The leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinabu had earlier endorsed Akpabio and Senator Jibrin Barau of Kano North as deputy.

Barau won his election unopposed.

Akpabio, 60, served as governor of Akwa Ibom State from 2007 to 2015 and Senate Minority Leader from 2015 to 2018.

He was appointed Minister of Niger Delta Affairs in 2019 and resigned in June 2022 to contest the APC presidential primary.
