In what has evidently been commended as a bold stride towards improving access to clean water supply across the Sokoto State metropolis, Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, on Wednesday, commissioned the newly completed Tamaje Water Scheme valued at over N14.1 billion.
Arewa PUNCH reports that the Tamaje Water Project is seen as one of the six major water infrastructure projects of the Aliyu-Sokoto led administration.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Tamaje, the governor described the project as a ‘critical milestone’ in addressing the growing demand for potable water in the state capital and its environs, especially in light of the city’s rapid urban expansion.
‘Access to clean and potable water is not just a basic necessity – it is a fundamental human right’, Aliyu declared.
While emphasising the administration’s commitment to sustainable water access as a pillar of public health and economic progress, he revealed that the Tamaje Water Scheme is designed to deliver three million gallons of water daily, and is also part of a broader network of six schemes that will jointly supply 40 million gallons per day once completed.
The additional schemes include those at the Old Airport, Gagi, Mana, Runjin Sambo, and Ruga Liman.
The governor who seized the occasion to pay tribute to ex-governor and Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko for initiating the water project during his tenure, stressed, ‘We are building on the solid foundation laid by the previous administration. This is a continuation of that vision’, he said.
The governor, while also welcoming the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, who graced the occasion as a special guest of honour, underscored the spirit of national collaboration.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the project, Aliyu urged the residents to take ownership of the infrastructure and guard it against vandalism.
‘Protect this facility as your own. It is for your health, your families, and the future of Sokoto’, he urged.
He assured the public of the government’s readiness to complete and commission the remaining four projects in due course, alongside continued investment in the Sokoto State Water Board, particularly in resolving power supply challenges to ensure uninterrupted operations.
The Sokoto State Chief Executive Officer further extended gratitude to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his efforts at repositioning the nation while pledging Sokoto’s unwavering support to the Federal Government.
The PUNCH reports that the flag off ceremony marks a significant chapter in the state’s infrastructure development drive, reflecting the Aliyu administration’s agenda to deliver life-enhancing projects with lasting impact.
‘Let us continue to work hand in hand to build a better, healthier, and more prosperous Sokoto State for all’, the governor concluded.
In his own remarks while inaugurating the project, the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, commended the Sokoto State governor for executing people-oriented projects and reasoned that the governor was working in tandem with the renewed hope agenda of President Tinubu.
