Following Saturday’s protest by groups protesting against hunger and bad governance at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, human rights organization, Amnesty International has stated that 50 peaceful protesters were arrested by security agencies.

Recall that Policemen on ground and operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS at about 11am dispersed protesters by firing several cannisters of tear gas while some of the protesters were arrested.

During the shooting, many of the protesters and journalists ran for cover and were chased by the security operatives leading to some of the journalists being arrested but later released on identification while the protesters were whisked away.

However, in a tweet on X, Amnesty International said, “The Nigerian authorities must immediately end the ongoing violent crackdown on peaceful protesters who convened at Moshood Abiola Stadium Abuja.

“The over 50 peaceful protesters arbitrarily arrested across the FCT must be released immediately and unconditionally.

*The shocking and unconscionable use of deadly force on protesters against hunger in the FCT is unacceptable.

“Those suspected of responsibility must be held to account. “People have the right to peacefully demand accountability through protests. This right must be respected. “
