The Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN) has approved immediate increase in bakery products, which include bread, biscuits, cake and pastry.

Last month, AMBCN announced a 15 per cent increase in the price of bread from 24th July. But the statement by the body at the end of its National Executive Committee meeting on Monday did not indicate the percentage increase in its products.

The statement by AMBCN’s National President, Alhaji Mansur Umar; and National Secretary, Hon. Jude Okafor blamed the upward price review on “increase in the prices of our bakery products and that of production after our last increment of July 2023”.

It said that “the unprecedented galloping increase on our costs of production has now moved flour from N31,000 t0 N39,000, sugar from N38,000 to N48,000”, explaining that those increases amounted to “additional N4.8 million and N6 million per truck of 600 bags of flour and 600 bags of sugar respectively.

AMBCN further said: “These increases also affect all other factors of our production. We are indeed constrained to effect these further increases in order to remain in business.

“Members are further advised to adhere strictly to best manufacturing practices so as to safeguard the health of our fellow country men and women.

“We hereby reiterate one of our cardinal objectives which is not to compromise the standards set by regulatory agencies in the face of this extremely challenging situation”.

This new price, which the association did not mention, comes into effect immediately.

“It is also the decision of the National Executive Committee in session that our association shall continue to be responsive reasonably to fluctuations in prices as we await expected intervention of our government as soon as possible.

To our customers, we greatly appreciate your understanding and patronage. We appeal to you to continue to be patient as we await our government expected interventions” the statement also stated.
