Bauchi State government has rewarded the Daben Kasuwa community in Ganjuwa local government area with 200 bags of rice and millet in appreciation of their patriotism.
The donation came after a trending video on social media showed a truck carrying foodstuff, which fell near the village and the people guarded it from being looted.
The community’s action is seen as unprecedented at a time when Nigerians in major cities and towns have resorted to looting warehouses and trucks loaded with food items, as hunger and anger over rising food prices persist.
While handing the bags of rice to the people, Governor Bala Mohammed, who was represented by the commissioner for culture and tourism, Abdu Hassan, said the state government was proud of the Daben Kasuwa community for the selfless act.
Receiving the foodstuffs, Sarkin Daben Kasuwa, Malam Sanusi Sale, appreciated the governor for his gesture, adding that the community has a record of zero crime.
He used the medium to call on government to provide the community with basic amenities such as potable drinking water, secondary school, electricity and standard healthcare facilities.
