Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany is expected to spend several weeks recovering after collapsing while watching a training session involving the club’s reserve team.
The German champions confirmed on Friday that the 40-year-old Belgian had received medical attention and was undergoing further examinations in hospital.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said on Saturday that the club would give Kompany sufficient time to recover, stressing that his return would not be rushed.

“Vinnie will get all the time he needs. We’re not going to start setting up any timelines,” Eberl said.

He added that the club would wait for the results of the medical examinations before determining how long the manager would be unavailable.

Reports suggested that Kompany had experienced health problems in the days before his collapse.

The former Manchester City captain missed a training session and a pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern’s UEFA Champions League encounter with Arsenal on Wednesday. However, he returned to the dugout for the match, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

His latest health setback is also expected to affect Bayern’s preparations for their Bundesliga fixture away to Freiburg on Sunday, with assistant coach Aaron Danks set to lead the team in his absence.

Eberl expressed confidence in the existing coaching staff, indicating that the club did not intend to make changes to the technical team while Kompany recovers.

Bayern have not disclosed the cause of the manager’s collapse and are awaiting the outcome of his medical examinations before providing further details about his condition.

Kompany took charge of Bayern in 2024 after managing Burnley in England. He guided the Munich club to the Bundesliga title in his first season and had his contract extended in October 2025 until June 2029.

The club’s immediate priority is now to ensure that the manager receives the necessary medical care and time to recover before considering his return to the touchline.
