The Borno State Police Command has arrested and charged five men to court over allegations of political thuggery, breach of public peace and possession of suspected illicit drugs in Maiduguri.

The suspects were arrested at about 6pm on 25 September 2026 during a routine township patrol around the West End Roundabout area of the city, the command said in a statement issued on Thursday.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the men were allegedly engaging in conduct capable of causing a public disturbance when officers intercepted them.

The police said officers recovered 15 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, 100 tablets suspected to be Diazepam, also known as D5, a shisha pot, a pair of scissors and two T-shirts bearing the inscription “Tinubu Must Go”.

“Statements were obtained from the suspects during preliminary investigation. Upon completion of the initial investigation, the case was charged to court,” Daso said.

The arrests have generated debate on social media, with some commentators alleging that the suspects may have been targeted because of their political views.

The police rejected that suggestion, saying the Nigeria Police Force was a professional and non-partisan institution that did not discriminate against people based on their political affiliation or views.

“The Nigeria Police Force is a professional, non-partisan institution and does not discriminate against persons on the basis of political affiliation or viewpoint,” the statement said.

The command said it remained committed to protecting fundamental human rights, the rule of law, due process, accountability and transparency.

Daso said the decision to take the matter to court would allow the judicial process to determine the allegations, while urging members of the public to rely on verified information rather than speculation.

“The Borno State Police Command remains committed to professionalism, impartiality, accountability and the protection of lives and property,” he said.

The suspects are expected to face charges relating to public disturbance and alleged possession of illicit drugs. No date for the hearing has been announced.
