Canada has pledged a significant contribution of CAD 25 million (about USD 23 million) to Unitaid to expand access to medical oxygen in low- and middle-income countries, including Nigeria. This funding is aimed at addressing the urgent need for medical oxygen, which has become even more critical during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The funding will support efforts to boost access to liquid medical oxygen, lower the costs of gas and equipment, strengthen healthcare infrastructure, expand technical capacity, and ensure the safe use of medical oxygen. The initiative will also assist countries in developing strategic national oxygen roadmaps and preparing for future health emergencies.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced this new funding during the Global Fund’s Seventh Replenishment Pledging Session at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The support aligns with Canada’s commitment to equitable access to COVID-19 treatments and is part of its broader strategy to enhance global health resilience and preparedness for future health crises.
Canada’s collaboration with Unitaid and its partners reflects a proactive approach to addressing health inequities, particularly in the access to essential medical supplies like oxygen. This contribution is expected to save lives by strengthening health systems in countries such as Nigeria, providing critical support for treating severe COVID-19 cases, and improving maternal and child health outcomes.
