Canadian singer Celine Dion broke down in tears of joy on Saturday as she fulfilled her long-awaited dream of returning to the stage with a sold-out concert in Paris.
The 58-year-old singer appeared visibly emotional as she opened her first full concert in six years with her 1990s French-language ballad, On ne change pas (“One Doesn’t Change”), performing before about 30,000 enthusiastic fans at the Plenitude Arena on the western outskirts of Paris.
“These are, of course, tears of joy. I’m so delighted to see you,” Dion told the audience before blowing kisses to the packed crowd.
Her return marked a remarkable comeback after she was diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare and incurable neurological disorder that causes muscle stiffness and spasms.
The condition forced Dion to cancel performances and raised uncertainty over whether she would ever be able to return to live performances.
“The path was rockier than expected,” she said in both French and English.
“But I held on to a faint ray of light in the distance, deep in the mountains.”
“Tonight, I want to sing for you, sing for myself, sing for life,” she added.
The emotional performance was met with an enthusiastic reception from fans, many of whom dressed in sequined outfits, glittered their cheeks and wore T-shirts featuring Dion or references to some of her biggest hits.
The concert marked Dion’s first full-scale performance in six years and represented a significant moment in her ongoing recovery and return to live music.
