A co-founder of Newswatch magazine, Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed has died. He was 70 years old.

According to family sources, Mohammed, who unveiled his memoirs, Beyond Expectations late last year, had been ill for some time. He missed the evening of tributes organised last November for another co-founder of Nigera’s first weekly magazine, Prince Dan Agbese.

Together with Mr. Dele Giwa, who died on 19 October 1986 through parcel bomb, Mr. Ray Ekpu and Agbese, Yakubu led the team that founded Newswatch in 1984.

He was the magazine’s Executive Editor and later Deputy CEO, playing a key role in Nigerian media history.

In the 1980s, MMohammed was editor of the National Concord, founded by the winner of Nigeria’s 12 June 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola.
