Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has described the re-election of his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, as a remarkable victory achieved against formidable political opposition.
Davido spoke on Tuesday while addressing journalists at his country home following Adeleke’s victory in the 15 August Osun State governorship election.
Congratulating the governor, the singer described the election as a difficult contest, claiming that several prominent political figures had rallied against the incumbent.
“Let me congratulate my governor for his re-election for the hard-fought battle. Let me not say battle but war, where you have 17 governors, 50 senators, House of Reps, I don’t know how many they were against one man and he came out victorious. God is good,” Davido said.
The singer attributed Adeleke’s victory largely to the support of voters across the state, whom he praised for standing by the governor and protecting their votes during the election.
Davido said the level of support for the Adeleke family had been overwhelming, adding that he became emotional several times while witnessing events on election day.
“I can’t remember how many times I cried that day because the love was massive,” he said.
According to the singer, Adeleke’s victory should serve as a lesson to political leaders across the country, arguing that leaders who genuinely serve their people would enjoy their support at the polls.
“My uncle should be an example to all other people out there. It shows all other governors out there that if you work for the people, the people will be with you and God,” he said.
Davido also thanked the people of Osun State for supporting Adeleke and his family despite what he described as attempts at intimidation and vote-buying during the election.
Beyond the election, the singer announced plans to expand his involvement in youth and sports development in the state.
Davido, who serves as chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund, said he deliberately postponed some of his planned initiatives until after the governorship election.
“As chairman of the Sports Trust Fund, I want to do a lot of things but waited for the election to be over,” he said.
He disclosed that one of the initiatives under consideration was the development of a recreation centre for young people, with facilities including football pitches, swimming pools and basketball courts.
According to Davido, the proposed centre would provide young people with opportunities to discover, develop and showcase their sporting talents while promoting healthy recreation.
The singer has been one of Adeleke’s most prominent celebrity supporters and actively participated in his campaign ahead of the election.
Adeleke secured a second term after defeating his major challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, in the 15 August poll.
Following the election, Davido said his attention would now turn to initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities for young people in Osun State, particularly through sports and recreation.
