The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared support for ‘The Diplomatic Games Week’, which is being organised by Diplomacy Publishing & Events (DPE).
In a letter recently, the Ministry gave its nod to the recreational engagement planned for the diplomatic community in Nigeria, according to CEO of DPE, Sòókò Deji Ajomale-McWord.
Under the theme, ‘Negotiating World Peace and Prosperity Through Sports Diplomacy’the event, which is scheduled for 8 to 10 November 2024, in Abuja, started as Diplomacy Stableford Golf Tournament in 2019 at Ikoyi Club 1938. Three years later, it was moved to IBB International Golf & Country Club, Abuja where it was received with all zest by the golfing diplomatic community.
In 2024, the organisers decided to make it more inclusive, as not everyone fancies golf. This led to the conceptualisation of The Diplomatic Games Week. According to Ajomale-McWord, the activities of the week will now include golf, tennis, chess, e sports, football and polo.
He said that entries are open to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and agencies under it, embassies and international organisations with diplomatic mission status. Registration will via www.dpeevents.africa.
Ajomale-McWord said: “We are super excited and grateful that after half a decade of keeping the diplomatic community engaged recreationally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has thought it worthy to identify with us. This journey started in 2019 because we are in awe of how diplomats are able to help broker and keep the level of peace/sanity and prosperity that our world still enjoys, and DPE, as a firm that uses available tools of diplomacy to advance global peace, prosperity and harmony, thought it necessary to celebrate diplomats and diplomacy. As for venues, we will reveal them in due course said”.
