Scores of Point of Sales (PoS) operators allegedly selling Naira at a high prices were said to have been arrested over the weekend by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at Akure South and Akure North Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Ondo State.
The suspects were alleged to have bought cash from banks and sold the notes (N500 and N1,000) to their customers at exorbitant prices.
A witness stated that the men, who wore a red jackets with EFCC inscriptions on it, stormed the popular Oja-Oba market in Akure and arrested many PoS agents along the road.
“They have arrested many PoS attendants in Oja Oba area. If they come to you, they will ask you to disclose the source of your cash and how much you are charging your customers and also ask you to take them to the person that gave you the money.
“Some PoS attendants, who got the information before hand, abandoned their stands and fled”, the source said.
Another source said the EFCC operatives were in the town with their bus at Oba Ile in Akure North LGA where they made some arrests of the PoS operators
She said: “A PoS agent was attending to customers when a woman came down from the bus and asked how much he charged on every N1,000.
“As at the time the transaction was made, I saw the woman signaled to some men and that was how I knew they were EFCC officials and they whisked him away”.
Efforts to reach the EFCC spokesman, Mr Wilson Uwujaren on the development were unsuccessful as his telephone line was not going through as at the time of filing this report.
